Shalyatantra is a distinct branch of Ayurveda which deals with disorders which require surgical interventions at some stage of the disease. It explains and demonstrates surgical and parasurgical procedures like Raktamokshana ( Blood letting therapy, Leech therapy),Ksharakarma, Ksharasutra, Agnikarma etc.The uniqueness of the department is the OT facility in the hospital which helps the students in practising the classical surgical technique that where performed since thousands of years and practicing successfully even today. The department have well equipped OPD , minor OT and Major OT facility for the conduction of Ksharakarma , Ksharasutra procedures, Jaloukavacharana , Wound dressing and Trauma care for the management of diseases like Anorectal diseases (Haemorrhoids, Fissure -in - ano, Fistula-in-ano, Pilonidal sinus) , Dushta vrana (Ulcers) and Bone related diseases like Fractures and dislocations, Spine disorders and Calcaneal spur and Gastrointestinal disorders like Peptic ulcers, Gastritis etc and Urogenital diseases like urinary calculi , UTI etc.
The department also provides undergraduate students the exposure to modern surgical procedures and casualty managements at Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for 1 month which makes them capable of doing emergency management and observe surgical cases.
